Aventura man accused of stalking former condo board opponent and brandishing weapons

AVENTURA, Florida. – An Aventura man faces two criminal charges after police accused him of stalking a former condo board opponent and brandishing weapons amid a dispute that lasted for months.

Moises Mitrani, 73, faces charges of stalking and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following his arrest Tuesday.

According to an arrest report, Mitrani was running against the victim to become board director of Harborside Condominiums, at 3640 Yacht Club Drive. Police said he ultimately dropped out of the race and the victim was re-elected.

Police said that between March 5 and May 26, Mitrani left 10 threatening voicemails, sent approximately 500 text messages and made 40 to 50 calls to the victim's cellphone, despite her pleas to stop.

“Mitrani’s actions and behavior caused the victim to fear for her safety and caused her emotional stress,” the police report states.

“It should be noted that approximately three months ago, the accused (Mitrani) showed up in the lobby of the condominium where he began yelling and screaming asking security to call the victim to that she come down from her apartment,” the investigator wrote. “(Moments) later, the defendant went to his vehicle and returned with a handgun, (brandishing) it at the employees and then placing it on the security counter.”

Additionally, police said an “aggressive” Mitrani entered the lobby last Thursday, demanded the victim come talk to him, then “pulled out a large knife he had in a book under his left arm.” .

The report says Mitrani pointed the knife at the building security guard and said “he had something” for the victim.

It says the security guard felt “scared and threatened” and told Mitrani she was calling the police. Police said he then put the knife back in the book and walked out.

Police said the victim obtained a protective order from a Miami-Dade judge the same day.

Following his arrest Tuesday on charges of aggravated stalking and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Mitrani faced Miami-Dade Judge Mindy Glazer on Wednesday, who ordered him held on $3,500 bail.

She found probable cause to charge Mitrani with a single count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and a lesser charge of misdemeanor stalking.

“This is a 'come to God' moment for him,” Mitrani's son, a lawyer, said by telephone during the court appearance.

Glazer ordered Mitrani to stay away from the victim. He told her he no longer lived in the condo building.
