The San Diego County Sheriff's Department has publicly identified an inmate who died last week after suffering a medical emergency at the San Diego Central Jail.

Sheriff's deputies responded to a report that Richard Woodford, 42, had collapsed at the Front Street Detention Center and found him unconscious and unresponsive on the floor of a shower room around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Despite life-saving attempts by medical personnel and paramedics, Woodford died before being transported to a hospital, the department said.

“At this time, the cause and manner of death have not been determined by the (county) medical examiner's office,” sheriff's Lt. Michael Krugh said Tuesday.

Woodford, who was homeless, was arrested June 25 in Santee on a misdemeanor warrant charging him with intent to defraud and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
