Augusta father identified as victim found dead on 15th Street

The Augusta man found fatally shot Friday morning outside a 15th Street business has been identified.

Marc Whitehead, 30, of Druid Park Avenue, was found dead around 7:43 a.m. Friday in the parking lot of DuraMed Medical Services, a medical supply store located at 1543 15th Street in Augusta. It was located 800 meters from his residence.

Officers responded to an injured person at 7:43 a.m. Friday and found the victim's body, according to sheriff's Sgt. John Perry. He had been shot at least once and was pronounced dead at 8 a.m. No information on the motive or suspect has been released.

Whitehead is remembered online as a father and good friend who may have hung out with a bad crowd.

“I remember growing up in the sandbox,” Stephon Sims posted on Facebook. “I love you and wish I had the chance to see you or say goodbye my brother and my friend… and I’m literally messed up and can’t even focus right now… why did you have to leave so soon.”

Whitehead, nicknamed “Durty,” was named as a suspect in a 2018 shooting at the Bon Air Apartments. He was accused of shooting a man twice after a fight inside an apartment. But the charges were dropped a year later after a motion for immunity from prosecution was granted, according to court records.

In a weekend post, Alphonzo Thompson said he warned Whitehead not to associate with certain people.

“When I came back to town…I felt it and I begged you G,” Thompson said. “Someone has to answer that.” You were off the path G.
