Auburn building fire displaces 20 residents

The Auburn and Lewiston fire departments responded to a structure fire located at 271 Court St. Monday afternoon.

AUBURN, Maine — Nearly two dozen people in Auburn were displaced after a building fire Monday.

The Auburn and Lewiston fire departments responded to a structure fire located at 271 Court St. Monday afternoon with initial reports of a person trapped inside the building, according to a news release from press. When crews arrived, the building was reportedly cleared.

Auburn firefighters at the scene told NEWS CENTER Maine the fire was contained to the top floor of the three-story building, but there was significant water damage to the lower floors.

The 20 residents and their pets were evacuated safely, but were displaced, firefighters said. The American Red Cross of Maine is currently reportedly working with residents to find them shelter.

Firefighters attributed the quick and successful evacuation to the working smoke detectors.

The fire remains under investigation but does not appear suspicious, the Auburn Fire Department said.

The Auburn Police Department, Public Works and Electrical Division, as well as Central Maine Power, assisted at the scene, according to the release.
