Attorney general's office investigating Friday shooting in which Baltimore officer was injured and suspect fatally shot – Baltimore Sun

A Baltimore police officer was shot in the chest and a man died from his gunshot wounds after a shootout with officers in South Baltimore Friday evening. The Maryland Attorney General's Office said Saturday it was investigating the shooting.

Around 10 p.m., police were investigating a shooting a few days earlier that left no one injured in the 3400 block of South Hanover St., Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said during the a press conference Friday evening.

Officers approached a man sitting on the porch of a commercial building in the area of ​​S. Hanover Street and Baltic Avenue and began questioning him, according to a news release from the attorney general's office. As officers spoke to the man, he began to pull out his gun, Worley said.

A preliminary review of body-worn camera footage by the attorney general's office showed that after the man removed a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers, police gave the ordered the man to drop the weapon. He did not obey.

The man and several police officers exchanged gunfire, which hit the man, according to the release. A police officer was also hit by gunfire in his bulletproof vest.

Officers provided medical treatment to the man, but he was pronounced dead at an area hospital, according to the release. A handgun was found near the man at the scene.

“We are grateful to the officers for following up on an incident where multiple people may have been shot and who knows if this individual may have shot other people,” Mayor Brandon Scott said during the press conference.

Worley did not say who fired first in the incident.

“No one is looking to shoot or kill anyone, but we're not going to have people pointing their guns and shooting anyone, much less police officers,” Scott said Friday night.

The injured officer had non-life-threatening injuries and was in stable condition Friday evening. Worley added that the officer's body armor saved his life.

The names of the suspect and the officers at the scene have not been released. All officers involved will be placed on administrative leave for at least 10 days, Worley said. Officers will also speak with the Health and Welfare Department.

The shooting is currently being investigated by city police and the Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Attorney General's Office, which investigates deaths involving police officers or incidents in which injury to a civilian is likely. 'cause death.
