Attack on man sleeping in car leads to fatal arrest, Paulding Sheriff's Office says

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A man is charged with murder and aggravated assault after he and another man attacked a sleeping victim in his car, according to the Paulding County Sheriff's Office.

On June 29, around 3:30 a.m., officers were called to 1789 Crossroads Church Road in Rockmart, where they found three men suffering from gunshot wounds. Investigation revealed that the victim, a 38-year-old man, was in his car when Troy Sparks, 34, and Brandon Stephens, 35, allegedly broke the window and began hitting him with a “blunt object.”

According to the sheriff's office, the man and Stephens shot each other, wounding all three men. Stephens did not survive.

Investigators concluded the victim acted in self-defense, and Sparks was arrested. Officers said both attackers had unspecified prior problems with the victim.

Additional arrests and charges could be forthcoming. The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information about the case to call the Paulding County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Tip Line at (770) 443-3047 or send a message through the sheriff's office mobile app.
