Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a statement that Michael Weaver Jr., 25, was charged with receiving stolen property II, illegal possession of a firearm and attempting to elude a police officer.

McMann said the arrest followed an APD officer's attempt to conduct a traffic stop on North Main Street around 9:40 p.m. The officer was attempting to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle whose license plate was expired.

“The vehicle continued a short distance and stopped,” McMann said. “The driver, Michael Weaver Jr., 25 of Atmore, fled on foot from the vehicle carrying an AR-15.”

McMann said that during the foot chase, Weaver was allegedly observed throwing the AR-15 into a nearby yard before being taken into custody.

“The AR-15 was reported stolen by the Demopolis Police Department,” he said. “Weaver has also previously been convicted of involuntary manslaughter.”

Weaver was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
