Police have a possible shooter “potentially” confined to a home in the area, but not in custody, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

Police did not immediately identify the house or say whether it was nearby.

Police recovered a 9mm handgun and three empty magazines from the scene.

Police believe the shooter got out of a vehicle shortly after 5 p.m. and approached the spray area and fired 28 rounds, reloading several times, then left in a vehicle.

Police believe it was a random shooting. Officers responded to the scene within two minutes of 911 calls, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

Police urged people to stay away from the active area around Auburn and John R roads.

Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan K. Barnett said: “We appreciate everyone's patience as we work through this situation. Prayers are with everyone involved in this tragic situation. We will share more updates as we have information. »

The county suffered a mass shooting in 2021, when four students were killed and seven injured at Oxford High School.

“It’s a real gut punch,” Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard told reporters. “We do not fully understand what happened in Oxford, and now we are faced with another total tragedy that we are dealing with.”

Patch has contacted police for more information.
