At least 9 injured in shooting at Michigan water park: police

A gunman opened fire at a water park in the US state of Michigan on Saturday, wounding at least nine people, including at least one child, police said.

The local sheriff's office said it was possible the suspect was confined near the scene of the shooting in Rochester Hills, a Detroit suburb.

“It appears the individual stopped, exited a vehicle, approached the area of ​​water spray, opened fire. Reloaded, opened fire. Reloaded. Left. This “So seems very random at this point,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told reporters, adding he believed the shooter had “no connection to the victims.”

He said preliminary information indicated there were between nine and 10 victims of varying ages, including an eight-year-old child. Several hospitals have received patients, he said.

A Glock handgun and empty magazines were recovered at the scene.

According to Bouchard, “we believe we have a suspicious individual nearby.”

He said assets, including SWAT teams and armored vehicles, had been deployed.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she was heartbroken to learn of the shooting.

“We are monitoring the situation as updates continue to come in and are in contact with local authorities,” she said on social media platform X.

Gun violence in the United States is common, and thousands of Americans are killed in shootings each year. Efforts to comprehensively reform the nation's gun laws have been stalled for decades.
