Fires/Alarms/Hazardous Conditions

05/17 02:52 AFD responded to 3476 Stratton DR. for a carbon monoxide detector. Crews arrived and checked the residence with air monitors and found no abnormal readings or indications of a carbon monoxide problem. The alarm was part of a hardwired system, and the tenant was advised to contact the landlord and inform them of a possible faulty alarm.

05/17 11:23 AFD responded to 2166 Winchester AVE for a commercial fire alarm. Crews arrived and discovered the cause was dust from construction. The alarm has been reset.

05/17 4:29 p.m. AFD responded to 4634 Hickory ST for a reported fire in the structure. When they arrived, the occupants reported that the fire was out. Crews checked the residence and confirmed the fire was out. The Ashland Fire Marshal and police have an ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire.

05/17 8:18 p.m. AFD responded to 451 Marcia ST for smoke in a commercial building. Crews arrived to determine it was a person vaping in a room that was mistaken for smoke.

05/18 04:02 AFD responded to 3101 Winchester AVE for a commercial fire alarm. Crews arrived to find construction work that had triggered the alarm. The alarm has been reset.

05/19 3:25 PM AFD responded to 3101 Winchester AVE for a commercial fire alarm. Crews arrived to find construction work that had triggered the alarm. The alarm has been reset.

05/19 5:33 p.m. AFD responded to 700 39th ST for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, crews discovered it was an illegal fire at the rear of the home that had been mistaken for a structure fire.

05/20 00:29 AFD responded to 711 MLK BLVD for smoke in a commercial building. Crews arrived and quickly determined it was a faulty freezer/cooler. The power supply to the unit was isolated and there were no other hazards.

5/20 4:24 p.m. AFD responded to 3101 Winchester AVE for a commercial fire alarm. Crews arrived to find construction work that had triggered the alarm. The alarm has been reset.

05/22 08:14 AFD responded to 3684 Boy Scout RD for a residential fire alarm. Crews arrived and discovered that cooking smoke had triggered the alarm. The alarm has been reset.

05/23 09:14 AFD responded to 3702 Lansdowne DR for a commercial fire alarm. Crews arrived and discovered burnt food was the cause of the alarm. The alarm has been reset.

05/23 09:32 AFD responded to 2917 29th ST for a natural gas collision. Crews arrived to find a natural gas line had been struck during excavation and was leaking. Crews controlled the area where Columbia gas could arrive and cut off the flow of gas.

05/23 09:50 AFD responded to AVE Carter 2020 for a commercial fire alarm. Crews arrived and discovered the alarm had been caused by a poorly ventilated dryer. The alarm has been reset.

05/23 6:02 p.m. AFD responded to 3702 Lansdowne DR for a commercial fire alarm. Crews arrived to find a draw station had been activated. Crews searched the building, finding no problems and could not determine who activated the call station. The alarm has been reset.

05/23 6:07 p.m. AFD responded to 360 29th ST for a commercial fire alarm. Crews arrived to find that steam from a filled mop bucket in a closet had triggered the alarm. The alarm has been reset.

Motor vehicle accidents

05/20 07:11 AFD responded to 25th ST and Winchester AVE for a single MVA vehicle into an injured utility pole. Crews helped treat 1 patient and removed debris from the roadway. Crews also contacted AEP in reference to the utility pole.

5/20 11:59 AM AFD responded to 3394 Boy Scout RD for a single vehicle crash in the ditch with injuries. Crews arrived on scene and found a single vehicle in the ditch with no injuries. Crews remained ready until the vehicle could be removed from the ditch.

5/23 2:25 PM AFD responded to 9th ST & Winchester AVE for a stroke with two vehicle injuries. Crews arrived to find all lanes of the Winchester AVE blocked by debris. Crews blocked the roadway, helped treat 2 patients and removed debris from the roadway. The roadway was reopened after the vehicles were removed by a local towing company.

Emergency medical incidents

AFD responded to 4 emergency medical incidents resulting in the transport of 3 patients by BCEMS.

AFD responded to 1 overdose resulting in the transport of a patient by BCEMS.

Public Service

AFD responded to 11 requests for help from the public.

AFD Responded to 1 illegal burn.

The AFD intervened following 2 trees blocking the road.

The AFD intervened following a breakdown of a public service line.

Fire prevention

The AFD Fire Prevention Office carried out 19 inspections, 1 fire investigation and 5 consultations.

Fire Safety Message of the Week: Use your grill at least 10 feet from your house and never under a roof. If your grill catches fire, close the lid and turn off the burners or close the dampers. Be sure to turn off your propane tank after use.

Training

Training was completed this week on air monitors and flammable gases.
