Asheville Livingston Apartments Shooting: Timeline of Events

ASHEVILLE — About 20 gunshots were reportedly heard inside the Livingston Apartments the night a mother died after a fight broke out involving multiple weapons on June 24, according to newly released police reports.

The first officer arrived at the Livingston Street apartment complex around 8 p.m., following a 911 call reporting shots fired at 7:58 p.m., according to police call notes. Officers found four people, three suffering from gunshot wounds and one from blunt force trauma, according to a previous Citizen Times report.

A fight broke out involving a rifle, a handgun and a baseball bat, and several people fired shots, the report said. One resident said bullets went through his apartment window.

Officers found a woman on the ground, likely shot with an assault rifle, the notes said. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but another unit was called for another victim who had been hit with a baseball bat. Another victim was taken to the hospital by his mother, the police report said.

One person was arrested at 8:15 p.m., but notes indicated that “the real shooter” was a man who fled the scene in a pickup truck. A 911 caller said he tried to chase the truck despite being told not to by emergency services.

One of the shooting victims — later identified as Ashley Ryan Waddell, 40, of Asheville — was pronounced dead around 8:25 p.m. An autopsy was performed, which determined she was shot in the pelvis around 7:30 p.m.

The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office was called to assist and a second person was arrested at 8:48 p.m., according to the records.

A GoFundMe fundraiser to cover Waddell's cremation costs said she “lost her life defending her family.”

Once the scene was secured, the family went to the apartment to retrieve the victim's dogs around 11:30 p.m. The Citizen Times attempted to reach Waddell's family.

“Ashley meant the world to me and I still can’t find the right words to express how I feel,” her mother, Diane Brigmon, wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Ashley was always smiling and always positive, no matter what.”

APD officers later charged Isaiah Rayshawn Waddell, 23, of Asheville, with attempted first-degree murder of a 16-year-old. According to birth records from the Buncombe County Registry of Deeds, Ashley Waddell is Isaiah Waddell's mother.

Waddell remains in the Buncombe County Detention Center on $100,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 16, according to an online court database.

The Citizen Times asked the APD if the second person arrested had been charged with anything in connection with the incident.
