Arrest made in Sumter drive-by shooting

SUMTER, SC (WIS) – A 19-year-old man is in custody and charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a driver and wounding of a passenger Monday at Green Swamp Road and South Guignard Drive .

According to Sumter Police, Curtis Jefferson Jr., 19, of Mayesville, was taken into custody this morning and is being held at the county detention center. Police say they have also identified a juvenile involved in the shooting and are working to find him. Sumter police said they continue to gather information to locate the other individuals and the vehicle involved.

The arrest comes after officers responded to a call of shots fired around 7:30 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Green Swamp Road/South Guignard Drive when they found a crashed vehicle in the area.

Police said the driver, Tavares Keiwaun McFadden, 32, of Blanche Road, was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. His 28-year-old passenger, who was also shot, was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is currently recovering at home.

Police information shows McFadden's car was stopped at a traffic light on Green Swamp Road when a white sedan drove up and fired at the vehicle, which sped away on South Guignard Drive.
