COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A Columbus man is in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old woman last weekend.

Kenneth Hairston, 20, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and weapons possession while under disability in the death of Da'Mya Cummerlander. He was arrested on Tuesday.

According to Columbus Police, officers responded to the 2600 block of Woodsedge Road at 12:35 a.m. Sunday for a report of a shooting. At the scene, officers found Cummerlander suffering from a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Court records say a witness told police that Hairston, Cummerlander and four others were hanging out in a bedroom of a home when the witness heard a gunshot and saw that Cummerlander had been shot.

On June 3, Hairston and his attorney participated in an interview with police, according to court documents. Hairston told police that while they were hanging out in the room, people who were drinking and smoking marijuana started playing with guns. Hairston reportedly told police that he had not been drinking or smoking and that someone had handed him a gun.

During the interview, Hairston said the person who gave him the gun then told him to trade the gun with someone else. Hairston said he didn't want the gun and tried to return it. At that point, someone slapped his hand and the gun fired, hitting Cummerlander, according to court records.

Hairston remains in custody in the Franklin County Jail.

Police say during a candlelight vigil Monday night remembering Cummerlander at Krumm Park, two people were shot and killed. As of Tuesday afternoon, no information on the suspect or victim had been released.
