Arrest made in connection with Albany Memorial Day shooting, victim identified

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – The victim of the deadly Memorial Day shooting in Albany has been identified and a suspect has been arrested in connection with the case.

According to the Albany Police Department (APD), on Monday, May 27, at 12:19 p.m., officers responded to the 400 block of Lipsey Drive in reference to a shooting.

Charles Shavers Jr., 40, was found dead with a single gunshot wound to the chest. During the investigation, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation was able to identify Damontae D. Johnson, 17, as one of the suspects involved, according to the release.

Johnson was arrested at his residence and is charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

He is currently being held in the Dougherty County Jail.

Dekardre Adonis Barkley, 27, is also a person of interest in the homicide investigation, according to APD. Barkley also has two outstanding warrants for his arrest in a previous case.
