Arrest made in California Dreaming restaurant shooting | News

A 30-year-old James Island woman was arrested for attempted murder after police say she shot her manager for sending her home early because business was slow.

The Charleston Police Department arrested Kresha Simmons on May 31, a week after the shooting at California Dreaming in West Ashley. Simmons is also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Police accused Simmons of shooting his manager on May 24. Another man was also shot but the bullet did not break his skin, according to a police report.

On the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, Simmons' manager had decided to send some restaurant kitchen employees home early as business was slow, according to the incident report. He chose Simmons to go home early, sparking an argument between the two, police said.

Simmons left the restaurant and returned a few minutes later, according to a police report. Witnesses told police that Simmons began arguing with the manager again, watching her push the manager. The manager stepped back and extended his arm to create distance between them, according to a police report.

Simmons then shot her manager and fled the restaurant through the back of the kitchen and then out a fire exit, according to a police report.

The shooting occurred during the restaurant's opening hours on Friday, around 8:30 p.m., and customers were inside the business.

The business closed its doors after the shooting while police investigated the incident, according to police.

The victim was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina for non-life-threatening injuries.

Simmons is at Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
