Arrest for crash that killed pregnant woman and baby in Montco – NBC10 Philadelphia

A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a crash that left a pregnant woman and her child dead in Montgomery County in May, the district attorney's office said.

Jabrial Terry, 27, of Philadelphia, was arrested on two counts of vehicular homicide while intoxicated, unlicensed crash causing death/injury, possession with intent to deliver and other charges related to the May 4 crash that killed Nya Janae Stokes, 24, of Philadelphia and her infant son.

Authorities said the two-vehicle crash that killed Stokes and her baby happened around 6 p.m. in Whitemarsh Township.

Responding officers discovered a gold 2000 Buick LeSabre and a gray 2009 Toyota Corolla with severe front-end damage to both vehicles, officials said.

The driver of the Toyota, Anne Nyaga of West Norriton, suffered internal injuries and leg injuries, authorities said.

Authorities said the driver of the Buick, Terry, was helped out of the car by bystanders and had visible injuries to his face and legs. The passenger inside the Buick, Stokes, who was nine months pregnant at the time, was found unresponsive.

Terry and Stokes were not wearing seat belts during the crash, authorities said.

A bystander performed CPR on Stokes until authorities said medical personnel arrived and she was taken to the hospital where an emergency C-section was performed.

The baby survived delivery but died from injuries sustained in the crash five days later, authorities said. Stokes was pronounced dead at 6:49 p.m. the day of the crash.

At the scene, police found a clear sandwich bag and a prescription bottle containing marijuana inside the Buick, along with a large amount of cash on the driver's floorboard, officials said.

Hospital medical staff discovered Terry had numerous pills hidden in his groin area, including 39 oxycodone pills, 45 Xanax pills and eight buprenorphine/naxolone pills, officials said. Terry's blood tests revealed he had fentanyl, oxycodone, benzodiazepines and cannabinoids in his system at the time of the accident.

Through video and witness statements, officials said investigators discovered that the Buick driven by Terry was traveling eastbound on Skippack Pike at 50 mph in a 45 mph zone when he left the right side of the roadway into a concrete drainage ditch, then overcorrected and suddenly swerved into the westbound lane, striking the Toyota.

According to investigators, no mechanical problem could have contributed to the accident.

The investigation also revealed that the Buick's VIN number and license plate had both been altered, the vehicle was not insured or registered and the Buick's inspection sticker was expired, officials added.

Officials say Terry fled after the crash and was not found until U.S. Marshals located him Tuesday and took him into custody without incident.

He was arraigned and his bail was set at $99,000 cash, authorities said. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July.
