Armed teen arrested after fleeing police on foot

Around 8:36 p.m. Monday, Turlock Police responded to a battery in progress at the Park Place Apartments in the 3500 block of Crowell Road.

The caller said there were four teenagers fighting at the pool, three girls and a boy, and objects were being thrown into the pool.

The girls then all allegedly left in different directions, while the boy walked toward the front of the apartment complex, dropping a gun and retrieving it.

Officers arrived on scene and attempted to contact the boy, later identified as Leander Phillips, 18, of Keyes, who fled on foot toward the construction site just west of the complex. apartments and refused to follow their lawful orders.

Phillips eventually surrendered and was detained at the construction site in the 1500 block of W. Monte Vista Avenue.

A .45 caliber Taurus Judge was also found, which was clear with no trace on file.

During the incident, Officer Nwando crashed his patrol vehicle into a traffic light pole at N. Walnut Road and W. Monte Vista Avenue. Nwando was not injured, but his vehicle sustained moderate damage and had to be towed.

This came as a surprise, as Nwando is known to be a very careful driver who always obeys the California Vehicle Code.

The vehicle, a 2023 Ford Explorer, one of six hybrids in the department, had been in service for less than a year.

Phillips was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a concealed firearm and resisting a peace officer.
