Armed cyclist killed in Iowa shooting that injured 2 police officers, investigators say

Investigators say police in Waterloo, Iowa, were responding to a report of an armed cyclist in an incident that ended with two officers injured and the suspect dead

WATERLOO, Iowa – Police in Waterloo, Iowa, responded to a report of an armed bicyclist in an incident that ended with two officers injured and the suspect dead, investigators said Monday. State.

Police were dispatched to the scene shortly before 8:30 a.m. Sunday following a report of an armed man wearing all-green clothing and riding a bicycle. They spotted Kelvin Lee Plain Jr., 35, in Sullivan Park.

Plain fled on a bicycle and then on foot through the park. Officers shot Plain with a Taser as he ran, knocking him to the ground, the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation said in a statement.

“Plain then fired a handgun at both officers, striking one who was still in his vehicle and the other who was struck while on foot,” the statement said. “Both officers returned fire, killing Plain.”

The officers were hospitalized in stable condition on Monday and one of them is expected to be released later in the day, the DCI statement said.

The incident was caught on camera on the dashboard of the Waterloo police car, the DCI said.

“No additional information will be released at this time,” the statement said, citing the ongoing investigation. He added that once completed, the results of the investigation will be forwarded to the Blackhawk County Prosecutor's Office and the Iowa Attorney General's Office for review.
