A Navajo County man was recently sentenced to prison for making hoax threats in several states in a practice known as swatting while pretending to be real people.

According to a June 24 U.S. Department of Justice press release, James Thomas Andrew McCarty, 21, of Kayenta, Arizona, was sentenced to seven years in prison the previous week after pleading guilty on February 1 to hoaxing charges related to phone calls. two separate indictments from the U.S. Attorneys' Offices for the Districts of Arizona and Central California.

The press release also states that McCarty pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated identity theft in the District of Arizona.

In a conspiracy case dating back to Nov. 13, 2020, McCarty collaborated with others to access Ring home security accounts, the press release states. McCarty allegedly hacked into a victim’s Ring account in Florida, called police, falsely pretended to be the victim’s husband, who he believed had committed murder, held a hostage, and planted explosives in the home, the press release states.

McCarty live-streamed the police response, posting a message saying he found it funny, the press release added. He also victimized others by making several calls to California, the press release said.

On January 25, 2021, McCarty made fraudulent phone calls to high schools in Indiana and Oklahoma under the names of actual students at the targeted schools, claiming he was outside with an AR-15, a Glock and propane containers ready to shoot at the buildings, according to the press release.

On April 16, 2021 and May 20, 2021, McCarty used the name of a real homeowner in two calls to police where he claimed he killed his wife, would kill “everyone,” blew up the house, and had the house placed four bombs outside a retail store, according to the press release. The press release did not indicate what condition this house was in.

In 2008, the FBI identified the crash as “a simulated emergency that calls for a law enforcement response – typically a SWAT team.”
