Another teenager identified in connection with fatal stabbing of 16-year-old

HERRIMAN, UT (ABC4) — A second teenager was arrested Thursday in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old in Herriman the day before.

Hunter John Armstrong, 18, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony.

Officers with the Herriman Police Department responded near 14800 S Beckenbauer Ave. after receiving a 911 call. According to Deputy Chief Cody Stromberg, officers found a 16-year-old with a stab wound to the chest in the driver's seat of a vehicle.

Paramedics from Unified Fire Authority and the South Jordan Fire Department tried to save lives, but the boy died at the scene, Stromberg said.

During primary investigations, 19-year-old Keith Tyree McClendon — who was also arrested — allegedly said he planned to attack a 17-year-old because they had an “ongoing rivalry with each other,” police said.

McClendon allegedly said he recruited Armstrong and the now-deceased 16-year-old. Police say all three could have been seen via a surveillance system from the car to the area where the 17-year-old was attacked.

Reports say Armstrong stood in front of the 17-year-old's vehicle and blocked him from leaving. Police said this action helped McClendon and the 16-year-old during the attack on the 17-year-old.

“[McClendon] hit [the 17-year-old] several times to the face and body with brass knuckles and after the attack [the 17-year-old] required hospital treatment for multiple injuries and a separated shoulder,” police said.

The police department noted that although Armstrong has not currently been charged with participating in the physical attack on the 17-year-old, he conspired with McClendon and others to help and “make sure it happens”.

“His actions were quite serious since one of the attackers was fatally stabbed during the incident,” police said.
