The 45-year-old was remembered as a “crazy fisherman” who loved to frequent the pier.

“He was just a normal guy. He loved coming here and fishing all the time,” local fisherman Glenn Cooper told 7NEWS.

“He probably would have felt safe because it's very rare that anyone bothers you on the dock when you're fishing.”

Homeless Forrest Stevenson, 36, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday charged with murder.

He was arrested shortly after the alleged attack on the nearby beach.

It appears that the two men did not know each other.

Homicide Squad Detective Senior Constable Kate Lynch told the court it would take 12 weeks to gather a brief of evidence for the case.

Magistrate Marc Sargent remanded Stevenson in custody until November 6 and said the defendant needed prompt medical attention to make his detention “more comfortable”.

“The nurse will see you as soon as possible today,” Sargent said.
