Anchorage police have identified the man fatally shot by officers Monday as 21-year-old Tyler May.

May's identity was among a few additional details about the shooting revealed by Anchorage Police Chief-designate Bianca Cross during a news conference Wednesday.

Cross said police were responding to a report of shots fired Monday evening in the parking lot of the Anchorage Senior Activity Center in Fairview. She said the officers ordered the two armed men to put down their weapons.

“A man followed orders and was contacted and detained at the scene,” Cross said. “The second adult male continued to walk away from the officers. K9 was deployed and made contact with the second suspect.

Cross said May, the second suspect, pulled out a handgun as the K9 bit him and he was on the ground. Three police officers shot May, killing him. All three wore body cameras.

Cross said she has seen some, but not all, body camera footage of the incident. She said it was unclear why May fired her gun in the parking lot in the first place.

“I can’t give you an exact reason,” Cross said. She said May and the other man “at least knew each other and were from a neighboring residence.”

The other man was not charged and police determined that only May fired his gun, according to Cross.

This is the third time in less than a month that Anchorage officers have shot an armed man during a police intervention.

Last month, officers shot and killed Kristopher Handy, 34, as he responded to a report of a domestic dispute. Saturday morning, police officers shot and injured Kaleb Bourdukofsky, 22, after he allegedly shot at two men downtown, killing one. Cross said the three incidents are not related.

“They all appear to be isolated incidents, and everyone involved had weapons on them,” Cross said. “We don’t dictate the circumstances. We just answer calls and go from there.

As in the first two shootings, Cross said Monday night's body camera footage will be released after an investigation by the state Office of Special Prosecutions and an internal APD investigation.
