Anchorage driver arrested after hitting man on road while fleeing scene

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Anchorage police arrested a driver Thursday after she struck a man with her vehicle on Northern Lights Boulevard and called police to report him, but then hung up and avoided police for nearly a hour.

According to Anchorage police, 47-year-old driver Camelia D. Harrison struck a person with her vehicle around 2 a.m. June 13 near Maplewood Street and East Northern Lights Boulevard. She first called police dispatch at 2:09 a.m. to claim responsibility for hitting the pedestrian, but then hung up and did not respond to police calls.

Medics from the Anchorage Fire Department responded to the crash scene to assist the injured man, who was taken to a local hospital for further treatment and is expected to survive.

Harrison then called police again at 3:02 a.m. and reported his location to police, who arrived and conducted field sobriety tests. The results allowed officers to charge Harrison with driving under the influence. A breathalyzer test administered after she was remanded into custody at the Anchorage Correctional Complex indicated that she was not intoxicated by alcohol.

Following additional charges including driving under the influence, failure to render aid and leaving the scene of an accident with injury, Harrison was taken to Hiland Mountain Correctional Center. She was also cited for driving without proof of insurance and driving with a suspended license.
