A passenger train fatally struck a teenage cyclist on Friday on a section of coastal railway in the Sorrento Valley.

According to a statement from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, witnesses told deputies that three boys on bicycles were stopped at the crossing to allow a northbound train to pass around 12:30 p.m.

After the northbound train passed, one of the boys, an unidentified 17-year-old, crossed the railroad tracks on his bicycle without realizing that there was also a southbound train passing.

The boy was hit by the train and did not survive his injuries. The other two cyclists were not injured.

The medical examiner's office will identify the teen and determine the cause and manner of death, pending notification of his family.
