American tourist Albert Calibet disappeared in Greece: here's what you need to know

Albert Calibet, 59, has been missing since June 11 after visiting the Greek island of Amorgos, and was last seen wearing a dark shirt and Bermuda shorts, according to the Amorgos municipality.

Calibet, a former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, did not return calls from a friend he was supposed to meet at the end of a four-hour hike, which Calibet had taken on previous trips to Amorgos, people with knowledge of the matter said. ABC7.

Petros Vasilakis, police chief in the southern Aegean, told CNN that Calibet was alone in 104-degree weather when he left for the hike, adding that police were investigating 15 hiking routes after completed his research on the island.

Two French tourists, aged 64 and 73, disappeared Friday after walking on the Greek island of Sikinos, according to Vasilakis, who said police did not know exactly where they were walking or what their destination was. One of the tourists sent a distress message to the guesthouse where she was staying, which then alerted Greek police, Vasilakis said.

A 55-year-old American tourist was found dead on the Greek island of Mathraki on Sunday, three days after being reported missing by a friend with whom he was staying. Greek authorities found the tourist lying face down in a ravine about 300 meters from where he was last seen a week earlier. Three other tourists, an 80-year-old Belgian, a 70-year-old French woman and a 70-year-old Dutch man, died Friday while hiking in Crete, Greek officials told the New York Times. Michael Mosley, a former British television presenter, was found dead earlier this month on the Greek island of Symi. Mosley, 67, took the wrong route while hiking and collapsed where his body was not easily visible, his wife said.

Greek authorities have issued warnings as temperatures continue to rise across the country, including temperatures reaching 112 degrees on the island of Crete. The Acropolis in Athens was closed to tourists last week as temperatures reached 104 degrees.
