American teenager falls more than 100 meters while hiking in Switzerland (officials)

A 16-year-old American girl fell more than 300 feet to her death while hiking with her friend's family in Switzerland on Sunday morning.

The teenager – who has not been publicly named – was walking the Mysterious Gorges trail in Valais canton with her best friend and her family when she tripped about 328 feet down an embankment , indicated the local police.

First responders, including two helicopter crews, found the girl's body in the bed of the Trient river, authorities said.

The father tried to reach the girl himself but was stuck on a rock, they added.

He was unharmed but had to be evacuated by emergency services.

The local prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the causes of the girl's fall, the police press release said.

The U.S. Embassy in Bern is “providing all appropriate consular assistance” following the incident, a spokesperson told the Post.

“We mourn with the family who lost a loved one on June 9, 2024, in Valais, Switzerland,” the press release added. “Out of respect for the family during this difficult time, we have no further comment.”
