American pride remains near historic low

WASHINGTON, DC – Two in five Americans, or 41%, say they are “extremely proud” to be American. This is the fifth year in a row that the number has been between 38% and 43%. Twenty-six percent of American adults say they are “very proud,” which is also consistent with figures from recent years.

The combined 67% share of extremely or very proud Americans is consistent with numbers since 2018 and among the lowest in Gallup’s trend, just four percentage points above the record high of 63% in 2020. From 2001 to 2017, fully 75% of American adults said they were extremely or very proud, including majorities who were extremely proud.

The latest data comes from a Gallup poll conducted June 3-23, which found that 18% of Americans say they are “moderately proud” to be American, while 10% say they are “only a little bit” proud and 5% say they are “not at all” proud.

American national pride peaked after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, when patriotism increased in the United States. Extreme pride has been declining since 2015.

Most Republicans, but fewer Democrats and independents, are extremely proud

Republican pride in America has consistently outpaced Democrats, while independents’ views have been closer to Democrats’. Currently, 59% of Republicans, 34% of Democrats, and 36% of independents say they are extremely proud to be American. The 25-point gap in extreme pride between Republicans and Democrats today is similar to the 28-point average gap since 2001. The latest difference between the two parties is less than half the record gap — 54 points in 2019 — while only 22 percent of Democrats, a historically low figure, expressed extreme pride.

Meanwhile, Republicans' current extreme pride is statistically linked to group pride. 58%, a record low in 2022. Similarly, the percentage of independents who are extremely proud of their nation is close to 33% last year, the lowest for this group.

Conclusion

While the percentage of American adults who say they are extremely proud to be American is near its lowest level ever recorded, about two-thirds of them continue to be at least very proud. Republican national pride, while near its lowest point, remains high relative to that of Democrats and independents, although all political groups are significantly less proud than they were 20 years ago.
