Alton police identify Roadecker 'Roe' Watts in June 7 death

ALTON – The Alton Police Department has identified the name of the person who died in an early morning incident on Friday, June 7, as Roadecker D. Watts, 68, of Alton.

Roadecker, commonly known as Roe, was a well-known and well-liked person in the Alton community. He worked at JCPenney's at Alton Square Mall for many years. His expertise in men's style was impeccable and his customer service unrivaled.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Roe’s family and friends,” said Alton Police Chief Jarrett Ford.

At 3:02 a.m. Friday, the Alton Police Department received a 911 call from a residence located in the 200 block of W. 19th Street in Alton.

The police went to the residence where they discovered two men in the front yard. Watts was unresponsive and not breathing. Officers performed lifesaving measures while waiting for the Alton Fire Department. Once arrived, Alton firefighters also took life-saving measures. Watts was then taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased, according to Ford.

Ford said a preliminary investigation revealed it was a domestic incident. There is no threat of harm to the general public. The cause of death is still under investigation. An autopsy was performed on Friday, but no report was made.

The investigation is ongoing at this time. The Alton Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division is being assisted in the investigation by the Madison County Coroner's Office, the Madison County State's Attorney's Office and the State Police. Illinois.
