Alleged member of Stuart's 'Proud Boys' charged with assaulting police during Jan. 6 protest

A Stuart man, allegedly a member of the Proud Boys, has been charged with assaulting law enforcement, among other things, during the January 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) said Troy Vincent Garret, 48, was seen in publicly available footage gathering with other members of the Proud Boys near the Washington Monument in preparation for the march on the Capitol.

Rioters breached the Capitol's outer fence three minutes after gathering at the Washington Monument, then advanced toward Lower West Plaza, according to the DOJ.

Video footage shows Garret pushing a Capitol police officer's riot shield with his hand as officers tried to stop rioters from advancing beyond the police line, prosecutors say.

According to court documents, Garret remained near the police line with other rioters, holding a large billboard reading: “TRUMP 2020, KEEP AMERICA GREAT!” »

The group allegedly tried to use the billboard to get past the police cordon. The footage shows Garret helping the crowd push the backs of other rioters, trying to force his way through police.

The rioters finally managed to break through the police cordon. Court documents show Garret remained in the restricted area of ​​the Capitol until 4 p.m. and eventually moved to the north side of the Capitol.

Garret was charged with criminal offenses including assaulting, resisting or obstructing certain officers and civil disorder. He was also charged with crimes including entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, committing physical violence in a building or grounds restricted grounds and disorderly conduct in a Capitol building.
