Alleged Budapest Antifa attacker extradited by German authorities

German authorities extradited one of the suspects in a series of attacks in Budapest in February 2023, Police.hu reports.

In connection with last year's anti-fascist attacks, Budapest police immediately arrested three people and issued European and international arrest warrants for 14 perpetrators, three of whom were arrested abroad. One of them has now been extradited.

In February 2023, a group of antifa thugs attacked people chosen at random or based on their clothing, mistaking them for nationalist protesters, in broad daylight in public spaces in the Hungarian capital. The group attacked without saying they were doing so because of the dress and their presumption about the victims' political orientation. A total of five attacks took place in Budapest at that time, and police quickly realized they were part of a series.

One of the suspects, Italian citizen Ilaria Salis, was also accused of belonging to the violent group and was on trial in Budapest until recently. She was released from house arrest and returned to Italy, after winning a seat in the European Parliament.

The 23-year-old German national was arrested in Berlin last December on the basis of European and international arrest warrants. The man was intercepted at the Austrian-Hungarian border on 28 June 2024 by investigators from the Budapest Police Prefecture and taken to Budapest,

where he was questioned on suspicion of attempted assault endangering his life and attempted assault resulting in serious bodily harm.

The suspect refused to confess. He was taken into custody and his arrest was initiated.
