Alleged Bridgeport TD bank robbery suspect arrested: police

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — The Bridgeport Police Department has named a suspect in Thursday's armed robbery at the TD Bank branch at 1000 Lafayette Boulevard.

Eion Powell, 28, of Bridgeport, was taken into custody and is charged with first-degree robbery, faxing with a firearm, second-degree threatening, interfering with an officer and destruction/tampering of evidence, according to police.

On Thursday, around 4:20 p.m., the Bridgeport Emergency Communications Center received a panic alarm from the TD Bank located at 1000 Lafayette Boulevard, police said, noting they quickly confirmed that an armed robbery had taken place. place.

According to police, Bridgeport patrol officers went to the bank and searched the area, while a description of the suspect was obtained and released; Police said they knew the suspect may have been running on foot around Highland Avenue and Washington Avenue.

Officers in the area found a suspect matching the description at 98 Highland Avenue, in the Charles F. Greene Homes Apartments, between Buildings 4 and 5, police said. The officers confronted the suspect, who was sitting on the ground; he threw a black object under a nearby car that was found by police and determined to be a facsimile pistol matching a Beretta Model 92 pistol, according to police.

Police said a witness positively identified the suspect, who was determined to be Powell. A backpack containing $1,350 was found, counted by the bank manager and returned to the bank.

In the booking area, police said a paper note was on Powell; he attempted to destroy the note, claiming it was a love letter, but police said it was consistent with witness statements about the note shown during the robbery.

Powell's bond was set at $100,000, police said.
