All patrol vehicles now equipped with AEDs – Finger Lakes Daily News

The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office is proud to announce that all of its patrol vehicles are now equipped with Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) used to treat people in cardiac arrest.

Sheriff Brian Schenck told Finger Lakes News Radio that making AEDs available to his deputies is crucial for a large rural county like Cayuga, because deputies often arrive on the scene of a call before emergency responders or firefighters.

“Given the rural population we patrol, our deputies are often the first on the scene of an emergency medical call,” Schenck said. “So we want to have these AEDs available to try to save a life in the event of a cardiac emergency, especially if our deputies are there well in advance of other services that can provide that care.” »

The sheriff had requested additional funding for AEDs in his budget this year, which the Legislature approved.

“I think they see the need to [the AEDs] given some of the challenges we are facing recently with emergency medical services in our community,” Schenck continued.

Schenck added that he provides training to his deputies so they become familiar with how the rescue devices work.
