Alec Baldwin says all film and TV productions using guns should have a police officer on set to 'monitor gun safety'

Actor Alec Baldwin – who fatally shot a cinematographer on the set of his latest film with a gun loaded with live ammunition – said Monday that all film and television sets that use guns should have a police officer present to “monitor gun safety.”

“Every movie or television set that uses weapons, fake or not, should have a police officer on set, hired by the production, to specifically monitor gun safety,” Baldwin said. said in a tweet.

Baldwin fired a gun on set during a scene rehearsal Oct. 21, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza on the set of the independent western “Rust” in New Mexico.

The Colt .45 revolver that Baldwin fired during a rehearsal was supposed to be loaded with dummy bullets, but investigators said live bullets were loaded into the gun.

The incident remains under police investigation and authorities said no one has been ruled out of possible charges.

“Rust” is an independently produced western in which Baldwin plays an outlaw who saves his 13-year-old grandson from being hanged for manslaughter.

According to the Los Angeles Times, several members of the film crew left the set to protest the security conditions hours before filming.

According to affidavits included in search warrant documents for the film's shooting at Santa Fe's Bonanza Creek Ranch, the gun Baldwin used was one of three “installed” by the film's gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez-Reed and left on a cart. .

The gun was then seized by the film's assistant director, Dave Halls, who brought it to Baldwin for a scene inside a church on the set, according to police documents.

As Halls handed the gun to Baldwin, Halls yelled “cold gun,” indicating that it contained no live ammunition before the incident, according to the documents.

The gun was then fired by Baldwin, striking Hutchins, as well as Souza, who was behind Hutchins at the time.

Halls said he did not know there were live rounds in the gun when he handed it to Baldwin, the affidavit states.

Gutierrez-Reed, the head armorer, previously said in a podcast that she almost didn't take her previous job because she wasn't sure she was experienced enough. “Rust” was his second film as head gunsmith.
