Albuquerque police release video of response to fatal shooting outside Isotopes Park

A group of men mistakenly shot an 11-year-old boy as he left an Isotopes game with his family last September.

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – A group of men mistakenly shot and killed an 11-year-old boy who was leaving an Isotopes game with his family last September.

They also shot his cousin, who was driving the family truck. The cousin survived, but she will suffer the consequences for life.

On Tuesday, police released video of the night Froylan Villegas died outside Isotope Park.

It's been about nine months since those shootings, and APD released the video Tuesday without any explanation of the timing.

“We have a secondary victim, a woman, approximately 25 years old, hit in the ribs and possibly the arm.”

The responding officers start with the driver of the truck riddled with white bullets stopped on University Boulevard in September 2023. This driver is Tatiana Villegas, she is part of the family confused with another target. A group of men shot them as they were leaving an Isotopes game.

His cousin Froylan Villegas, aged 11, died in the passenger seat. Froylan's mother and little brother were in the back seat. They both escaped without physical injuries, but the boy's mother did not leave the car without injuries.

“I tried to get it for 10 years.”

The agents asked many questions to which we now know the answers.

“I think it's a black Cherokee, if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, that's what we heard too.

Police later revealed it was a different type of black SUV with three men inside. A day later, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a public health emergency due to gun violence.

He mentioned this shooting and others that killed a 5-year-old child and a 13-year-old girl. This order was the subject of legal challenges for months and eventually came with some updates.

Then came the arrest of Nathen Garley a few weeks later. New Mexico State Police found pounds of drugs in his car during a traffic stop and linked him to the murder.

Jose Romero and Daniel Gomez also face charges.

“We hope that we can get this case to the point where we get a strong conviction and these individuals spend the rest of their lives in prison,” said APD Chief Harold Medina.

Garley and Romero could have trial dates in September. Gomez is out of prison.

The last time we contacted Tatiana Villegas' family, they said she was hoping to travel out of state for specialized therapy and hoped to be able to walk again one day.
