Alamosa sheriff's deputies shoot fleeing suspect after shooting: CBI

DENVER (KDVR) — Three Alamosa County sheriff's deputies are on administrative leave after allegedly shooting at a fleeing suspect who fired at law enforcement in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the incident began when an Alamosa sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a red Ford Explorer that was allegedly driving recklessly into a Safeway parking lot. The driver failed to stop for the deputy and CBI said the suspect attempted to elude the deputy.

The deputy gave chase and two other deputies assisted, according to the CBI.

The driver, identified as Justin Claude Trujillo, 27, allegedly crossed a grassy median into a residential area before exiting his vehicle and running. A deputy communicated verbally with him in the 1200 block of Third Street, according to CBI, but Trujillo allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired at least one shot at the deputy.

All three deputies involved in the chase returned fire. Trujillo was allegedly struck once in the abdomen and once in the leg. The CBI says deputies performed a medical procedure and then arrested him.

Trujillo was taken to the hospital and then transferred to a hospital in Colorado Springs where his condition was reported to be stable.

He will face several charges according to CBI, including:

  • Criminal attempt to first degree murder of a peace officer
  • First degree assault
  • Vehicle evaded
  • Threatening
  • Possession of a weapon by a former offender.

The three deputies have been placed on administrative leave while the CBI investigates the shooting.

As of Wednesday afternoon, no court proceedings were scheduled in Trujillo in the case.
