Alamance County principal and teacher's assistant charged after alleged abuse of student, sheriff's office says

An Alamance County principal and a teacher's aide have been charged after allegedly abusing a student, according to the sheriff's office. On Friday, April 26, deputies with the Major Crimes Unit began an investigation into alleged abuse of a student at Woodlawn Middle School. . After several interviews and working with the Alamance County Prosecutor's Office, detectives charged teacher assistant William Michael Jackson, 55, with one count of child abuse and one count of minor assault on a child under 12 years old. Detectives also charged Woodlawn Middle School Principal Thomas William Kazimir, 53, with one count of failure to report crimes against juveniles. Both appeared before a magistrate. on Thursday, June 13, 2024. Deputies said Alamance Burlington School System administration has been informed of this investigation. The department informed us that 2 staff members at Woodlawn Middle School have been charged with misdemeanors related to a school incident. Teaching assistant William Jackson was charged with one misdemeanor count of child abuse and one misdemeanor count of molestation of a child under 12 years old. Director Tom Kazimir was charged with one count of failure to report a crime against minors. As an employee for 10 months, Mr. Jackson's last day of work for the 2023-2024 school year was June 13. Director Kazimir is currently suspended with pay. as district and law enforcement investigations continue. On Friday, April 26, deputies with the Major Crimes Unit began an investigation into allegations of abuse toward a student at Woodlawn Middle School.

During the investigation, the Sheriff's Office said it developed probable cause to believe that a teacher's aide physically assaulted a student during school hours.

After several interviews and working with the Alamance County Prosecutor's Office, detectives charged teacher assistant William Michael Jackson, 55, with one misdemeanor count of child abuse and one misdemeanor count of the offense of assault on a child under 12 years old.

Detectives also charged Woodlawn Middle School Principal Thomas William Kazimir, 53, with one misdemeanor count of failure to report crimes against juveniles.

Both appeared before a magistrate on Thursday, June 13, 2024. Deputies said Alamance Burlington School System administration has been informed of this investigation.

The school system released the following statement after the incident:

Alamance-Burlington Schools regrets to announce that the Alamance County Sheriff's Department has informed us that 2 staff members at Woodlawn Middle School have been charged with a misdemeanor related to a school incident.

Teaching assistant William Jackson was charged with one misdemeanor count of child abuse and one misdemeanor count of molestation of a child under 12 years old. Director Tom Kazimir was charged with one count of failure to report a crime against minors.

As an employee for 10 months, Mr. Jackson's last day of employment for the 2023-2024 school year was June 13. Director Kazimir is currently suspended with pay while district and law enforcement investigations continue.
