Akron Shooting Press Conference: Mayor Shammas Malik Provides Update

AKRON, Ohio — A news conference is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today as Akron Mayor Shammas Malik, Police Chief Brian Harding and Acting Fire Chief Steven Kaut are expected to provide an update on the overnight shooting during which 25 people were shot, including one confirmed death. in the area of ​​Kelly Avenue and 8th Avenue.

Earlier Sunday morning, Akron police told 3News their officers responded to the scene shortly after midnight amid multiple calls of shots fired.

“Shortly after these calls came in, the call center received notifications from local hospitals that several people were arriving at the emergency room with gunshot wounds,” according to Akron police.

Initial police reports put a total of 27 gunshot victims. A statement released hours later by Mayor Malik and Chief Harding, however, lowered the number to 25, which includes a 27-year-old man who was confirmed dead.

A firearm and several dozen shell casings were recovered at the scene, police said.

Details regarding the suspects in connection with the shooting are unknown.
