Akron police to provide update on deadly shooting

SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) – Akron police are holding a press conference Monday afternoon to provide an update on the June 2 mass shooting in which 27 people were shot and one man died as a result of his injuries.

The victims were shot at a large birthday party just after midnight in the area of ​​Kelly and 8th Avenue.

Akron police said shots were fired from a car and a partygoer returned fire. A total of five weapons and 45 shell casings were recovered from the crime scene.

Police say they are combing through surveillance video, but there is no description of the suspect(s) or vehicle.

Lateris Cook, of Akron, died from his injuries. According to Akron Mayor Shammas Malik, Cook was a “beloved father, son and friend.”

As of last week, a 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old man remained in critical condition in local hospitals. Their names have not been released.

The youngest victim was 19 years old.
