What happened?

A street party in Akron Saturday night turned deadly, leaving 25 people shot and injured, including a 27-year-old man dead and two people in critical condition.

Police Chief Brian Harding said the shooting appeared to be an incident that occurred at a birthday party at Kelly and 8th Avenue and spilled into the street.

Around 10 p.m., police said they went to a private residence where the birthday party was taking place. About 200 revelers were there, setting off loud fireworks, and police asked them to disperse from the street due to car traffic.

Between 10 p.m. and midnight, people returned to the party, police said, and shortly after midnight, police said they began receiving calls about shots fired.

At the scene, police said they found two handguns and several types of shell casings, including rifle shell casings.

Police said there were at least 35 shell casings, consistent with what a News 5 reporter at the scene saw right after the shooting.

Video captured by News 5 photographer Mike Vielhaber shows police and 38 evidence markers on the ground.
