Additional firefighters arrive to battle Basin Fire in Fresno County

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — More than 100 additional firefighters are expected to join the battle against the Basin Fire in Fresno County.

U.S. Forest Service spokesman Mike Lindbery spoke to Action News from the incident command post at Sierra High School on Sunday with the latest on the fire.

“Obviously this fire has expanded, as I've explained before, into the lower Rancheria Creek area. We're hitting it very hard with the aircraft today,” Lindberry said.

“We are seeing strong growth on the west end of the fire, above Kings River. We are currently fighting this area with fixed-wing aircraft and ground crews,”

Lindbery said that as of Sunday, the Basin Fire had grown to more than 11,000 acres and was 0% contained.

But he expects that to change in the coming days with nearly 700 firefighters arriving from across the country.

“We have to make sure the line is able to withstand fire when it's tested with winds or factors like the heat that we're going to have here next week,” Lindberry said.

Meteorologists predict temperatures will reach 108 degrees on Tuesday, making the fire difficult to fight.

“We can fight the fire for a few days and we can do everything we can to stay hydrated, but it's very easy to fall behind, so we're going to keep our firefighters hydrated,”

Lindbery says area residents should be alert to the possibility of low visibility in the mountains and poor air quality.
