Accused pleads not guilty to shooting mother holding baby

A defendant in a nonfatal shooting pleaded not guilty to shooting a mother and her child during a hearing before Washington Superior Court Judge Anthony Epstein on June 10.

Darrious Johnson, 22, is charged with two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, aggravated assault knowingly, assault with intent to kill a minor while was armed, with four counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, second degree. cruelty to children and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convict, for his alleged involvement in a non-fatal shooting that occurred on May 5, 2023 in the 4500 block of Dix Street, NE.

According to court documents, Johnson allegedly shot a woman in the left arm while she was cradling her baby. The victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and the infant was unhurt.

At a June 10 arraignment hearing, Johnson and his attorney, Wole Falodun, pleaded not guilty to all charges and asserted Johnson's constitutional rights, including the right to a speedy trial.

The holidays are expected to return on July 12.
