A US major predicts that the recognition of Bitcoin as a weapon system will serve as a catalyst for reaching a $100 million price target.

US Space Force Major Jason Lowery made a bold statement regarding Bitcoin, describing it as a potential weapon system and highlighting its strategic importance to national security. Lowery, who is also a national defense researcher at MIT, emphasized the need for the US military to prioritize the investigation and integration of proof-of-work systems like Bitcoin. He claims that Bitcoin's proof-of-work consensus mechanism could serve as an important deterrent against cyberattacks, comparing it to traditional military means that deter physical attacks.

In a now-deleted X article, Lowery suggested that once the public gets over the fear of government bans on Bitcoin and recognizes it as a defense system, the national security implications will become clear. He speculated that this awareness could bring the value of Bitcoin to $100 million per coin. Lowery's view is rooted in his belief that Bitcoin can transform the global power grid into a massive and physically expensive computer, or “macrochip,” that can physically constrain malicious actors and protect data traveling across the Internet. He said it could spark a revolution in cybersecurity and help the United States maintain its position as a global superpower.

“Once we get past the fear of the government banning what we know and are comfortable calling it a weapon/defense system, the 2nd Amendment will come into play. But the real “Excitement begins when everyone simultaneously realizes its importance to national security (think $100 million per 'coin')”

Lowery's views are detailed in his book Softwar: A Novel Theory on Power Projection and the National Strategic Meaning of Bitcoin, which explores Bitcoin's potential as a tool for national security and power projection in the digital domain . However, the book was reportedly removed from circulation and from the MIT library for undisclosed reasons, adding a layer of intrigue to its claims. As of May 2024, the book is available again from Amazon.co.uk in self-published format.

Lowery's advocacy for Bitcoin extends to urging the U.S. Department of Defense to formally investigate the national strategic importance of proof-of-work systems. He argued that Bitcoin's consensus mechanism could deter adversaries from cyberattacks due to the high physical costs associated with maintaining the network, similar to how military means deter physical attacks.

Lowery's views have broader implications, especially as the United States grapples with the strategic value of Bitcoin and crypto amid increasing regulatory scrutiny. Its position contrasts with the current regulatory approach, which is more focused on litigation and control rather than supporting and integrating digital assets.
