A teenager accused of homophobia towards a police officer will not be subject to any further measures

A 16-year-old girl arrested after being accused of making a homophobic remark towards a police officer will not face any further action.

The teenager was arrested by seven police officers outside her home in Leeds, West Yorkshire, in the early hours of Monday.

Her mother, who uploaded footage of the incident to TikTok, said alongside the video that her autistic daughter told her an officer “looked like her grandmother, who is a lesbian.”

She said the officer “took it the wrong way” and claimed it was a homophobic comment before entering their home.

The girl was later arrested on suspicion of a homophobic public order offense, with footage showing her screaming as she was taken away.

She was initially driven home by the police officer at around 1am after a family member reported she was drunk in Leeds city centre.

West Yorkshire Police said on Friday they would face no further action and pledged to “take into account all lessons learned” after footage of the arrest sparked criticism on social media .

A police statement said: “In relation to an incident in Leeds on Monday, where a 16-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of committing a homophobic public order offence, West Yorkshire Police have now reviewed the evidence and have made the decision to take no further action.

“This concludes the criminal investigation and immediately releases the girl from her bond. His family has been updated.

“West Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Directorate continues to carry out a review of the circumstances after receiving a complaint regarding the incident.”

Deputy Chief Constable Oz Khan said: “We recognize the significant level of public concern that this incident has generated, and we quickly reviewed the evidence as part of the criminal investigation, leading to the decision not to take any further action.

“Without anticipating the outcome of the ongoing review of the circumstances by our Professional Standards Department, we would like to reassure the public that we will take into account all lessons to be learned from this incident.

“We appreciate the understandable sensitivities around incidents involving young people and neurodiversity and are genuinely committed to developing how we respond to these often very difficult situations.”
