A teenage girl is dead and at least four people were injured after a shooting in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A teenage girl is dead and at least four other people were injured after a shooting Friday night in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, police said.

Police were stationed around 11 p.m. near the corner of 33rd Street and Ridge Avenue in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood after hearing about “pop-up parties of minors and young adults” in the area, the police said. Inspector DF Pace.

Police were dispersing a crowd on 29th Street heading toward Fairmount Park when officers heard gunshots. Officers later found two gunshot victims in the park and rushed them to Temple University Hospital.

Pace said three other victims arrived in Temple in connection with the shooting, including a young girl believed to be 15 years old. The girl was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after 11 p.m.

After the shots were fired, the children ran in different directions and at least one victim stopped at a nearby gas station to ask for help, Pace said.

Police believe the other four victims, all males, are also juveniles or young adults. More information about their age and condition was not immediately available.

Police are still investigating what sparked the initial gathering, as well as a motive for the shooting.

“We don't know what started the shooting, what motivated it, if any of these victims were targeted,” Pace said. “It’s too early in the investigation.”

Investigators had found 11 shell casings at the scene by the time Pace spoke.

“The officers were on site here…we certainly knew that on warm evenings like this, young people are likely to congregate. And we know for the most part, in general, where they tend to congregate. And we are doing the “We are doing our best to keep them safe and enforce the curfew rules,” Pace added.

Municipal council in 2022 passed a bill requiring anyone under 17 to be home by 10 p.m. if they are not with a parent or returning from work.
