A teenage cadet's pride during a D-Day veteran's trip to France

A teenage Navy cadet has spoken of the pride he felt leading veterans across the English Channel to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Lance Corporal Jacob Brady, 15, from Whitley Bay Sea Cadets, was one of a handful of young cadets from across the country chosen for the trip.

He said it was “extremely important” to take part in the event, which saw veterans cross the English Channel on a training ship.

Jacob added: “This continues their legacy and we can learn and pass on their stories into the future. »

The Lance Corporal's group took part in a number of parades and commemorative services held to mark 80 years since the landings.

They traveled from Portsmouth to Pegasus Bridge in Normandy, France.

Second Lieutenant Stephen Johnston, from Whitley Bay Sea Cadets, said the trip was a great achievement for the youngster, who dreamed of joining the Marines when he was older.

“Being on board the flagship TS Royalist, one of the few square-rigged ships young people have access to, makes it even more special,” he said.

“And obviously, coinciding with all the events taking place in France, it’s simply exceptional.”
