A small plane crashes and sinks, injuring several people in Cumberland County, near Fayetteville.

FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina — Fire crews are responding to a plane crash in Cumberland County Sunday morning.

Three people were on board a Piper PA-28 single-engine plane when it crashed around 10:21 a.m. while leaving Gray's Creek Airport.

Several people were injured, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

A source close to the investigation claims that the accident occurred as the plane was taking off. The plane was reportedly engulfed in flames after crashing in a wooded area.

The Grays Creek Fire Department was among the first responders to the scene near 6045 Highway 87 South, not far from a neighborhood.

Sky 5 flew over the scene, and part of the crashed plane and a small fire could be seen peeking through the thick woods. Parts of the plane appeared blackened by the fire, and other parts appeared to have been nearly disintegrated as a result of the crash. Several trees were broken where it appeared the plane had cut them on the way down.

WRAL News is working to learn the severity of the injuries and what caused the plane to crash.
