A small plane coming from Florida crashes near the Turks and Caicos Islands: see rescue services

Two people from Florida were rescued by the US Coast Guard after their plane crashed in the Turks and Caicos Islands over the weekend.

The Coast Guard, in a news release Sunday, said it was alerted to the incident Saturday around 12:15 p.m. when supervisors received a request for assistance from the Turks and Caicos Islands Rescue Coordination Center. A 28-foot plane with two people on board crashed about 10 miles northwest of the island of Providenciale, the coast guard said.

Both individuals were located around 3:30 p.m. and were flown to Turks and Caicos International Airport Emergency Medical Services in stable condition.

Video footage of the incident shows rescue workers hoisting the two individuals onto a rescue plane. The identities of the two victims have not been revealed.

The plane took off from West Palm Beach

A Coast Guard District Seven spokesperson told USA TODAY the plane took off from West Palm Beach, Florida, and was heading to the Turks and Caicos Islands when the incident occurred. The cause of the accident is not yet known and is being investigated by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, the spokesperson said.

Several agencies were involved in the rescue operation, the Coast Guard said.

“The coordination of this rescue was made possible by our strong relationships with our international partners,” Lt. Connor Pascale, Coast Guard liaison officer in the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands, said in a statement. “These are the types of missions that we train for, we are grateful to bring these people home to their families.”
