A Modesto man drowns in Woodward over the holiday weekend, the sheriff reports. Safety tips

A Modesto man drowned Sunday while swimming at Woodward Reservoir, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department reported.

A news release says Franci Antonio Paz Madrid, 21, was reported in distress near Mountain View Point Campground just before 2 p.m. He was with a group visiting the reservoir north of Oakdale over Memorial Day weekend.

Madrid did not resurface while swimming with a friend, leading to searches with boats, divers, drones and helicopters, the statement said. Madrid's body was found around 8 p.m., authorities said.

It was the second drowning in Woodward in five weeks. The department reported that Oscar Rafael Coello-Flores, 24, of San Francisco, died off the coast of Mountain View Point on April 21.

Another recent drowning occurred in the San Joaquin River near Newman. Brenda Duran, 30, disappeared May 9 after jumping to help her daughter in trouble at the Fisherman's Bend trailer park, the Sheriff's Department reported. Volunteer searchers found his body two days later, authorities said.

Sunday's drowning in Woodward prompted the agency to offer safety tips:

  • Wear a life jacket. They can be borrowed for free at Woodward and Modesto Reservoir, as well as at several fire stations throughout the county.

  • Know your limits when entering a body of water.

  • Moderate your alcohol consumption.

  • Always swim with someone else who can provide assistance or reach out to others in an emergency.
