A man taken into custody for alleged assaults at Madeleine Cathedral

SALT LAKE CITY A 31-year-old man was arrested on Sunday after he allegedly began attacking random people during mass at the Madeleine Cathedral.

According to probable cause, Chandler Grillone entered the building while Sunday service was in progress and began assaulting random individuals. The probable cause statement also said he allegedly struck two people with a bamboo wooden sword.

He then punched a third person, which broke the person's glasses. The victim valued the glasses at approximately $1,500.

Police said Grillone's actions appeared unprovoked. Additionally, police also said Grillone was uncooperative during his arrest.

“…he turned away and refused to get into the police car,” the probable cause statement states. “(He) pressed his head and neck against the door, preventing him from be placed in the back of the police car.

Several orders were given by the officers for Grillone to comply, but he always refused to cooperate.

“(He) was placed in a WRAP for his safety during transportation,” the probable cause statement read.

He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of two counts of aggravated assault. He was also held for investigation into one count of assault and property damage. Additionally, he was booked for investigation of interference with a peace officer and disorderly conduct.
