A man is dead after a police-involved shooting early Wednesday morning in Jacksonville | News

At approximately 1:36 a.m. Wednesday morning, officers with the Jacksonville Police Department responded to 701 New River Drive in reference to a report of a domestic disturbance and shots fired.According to a statement released Wednesday by the JPD, officers encountered an armed subject who barricaded himself in the home along with six other individuals. The department's tactical team and negotiators were called in to respond to the incident.The six individuals were evacuated from the house through a side window, the release states. While helping the individuals escape through the window and away from the house, the suspect exited the rear of the residence with a firearm and opened fire.The officers returned fire and the suspect died at the scene, the statement added."This is a tragedy for everyone involved. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and officers involved," said Michael Yaniero, Jacksonville Public Safety Director. "We understand and appreciate the public's concern each time a police officer is faced with the difficult, split-second decision to defend themselves and others from an armed subject. Police work is difficult. Police officers are faced with decisions they must make to protect the public and there are times when an officer has no choice but to use deadly force.” This is an active and ongoing investigation that has been turned over to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
